Robert Lewis (later changed to "Louis") Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850. Robert Louis Stevenson chartered the yacht Casco from Dr. Samuel Merrit for a cruise in the Pacific in June 1888. Stevenson traveled with his wife Fanny Osbourne, his mother and his stepson Lloyd Osborne to Hawaii on board the Casco.
